Let the Government pay for your new Renewable Energy Heating System

The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) are really pleased with the excellent progress being made with home owners installing Biomass Boilers, Ground and Air sourced Heat pumps to replace their aging and expensive to run Oil, LPG and Electric  heating systems. Since the launch of the Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (DRHI) in April 2014,  105,210 homeowners have installed and registered for the DRHI for Ground and Air sourced heat pumps, Biomass boilers and Solar thermal installations. The DRHI  gives the owner a 7 year income stream which many are finding will pay for the whole cost of a new heating system especially for GSHP’s.

This process is much easier if you have a recent EPC (Energy performance certificate) which will have made an assessment of what energy for heating and hot water a typical house of your size and construction will use. If you do not have an EPC then you can get an idea from your existing energy bills how much energy your house uses. In the tables below you will find 6 examples for the different technologies and for two types of houses. The first is a typical 4 bedroom house with minimal insulation and a relatively high heat loss and the second is for a small semi-detached house or a very well insulated modern house. As the examples show it is worth upgrading to a new Renewable heating system whatever your property type.

The DRHI is proving popular as it is a generous contribution to the costs of installation and importantly you get the money over a short 7 year window, paid in quarterly instalments and set to rise in line with inflation (RPI). The income is treated as tax free so it turns your new “green” heating system into a secure and sensible investment that provides a quick 7 year return followed by many years of low maintenance and greatly reduced running costs for you to enjoy and help protect you against rising Fossil fuel costs. You can expect 10-50% ongoing running cost savings depending on the age, efficiency and fuel type of your existing heating system. As at June 2016 the Domestic tariffs are:

  • GSHP 19.33p/kwh
  • ASHP 7.51p/kwh
  • Biomass Boilers 5.2p/kwh
  • Solar Thermal 19.74p/kwh

Please note the RHI is being withdrawn for new Solar Thermal installations from April 2017

Please also remember there is also the Commercial RHI available for businesses, offices, factories, farmers and even property owners with at least two homes or more being run from one Renewable heating system.
